The Reason for Cynicism and how to Get out: Entitlement

The first weed is entitlement.  Yes entitlement.  According to Wikipedia:  “In clinical psychology and psychiatry, an unrealistic, exaggerated, or rigidly held sense of entitlement may be considered a symptom of narcissistic personality disorder, seen in those who “because of early frustrations…arrogate to themselves the right to demand lifelong reimbursement from fate.””

Now, I’m not a psychologist nor a counselor, yet.  But I think this provides a good definition to entitlement.  I have had the unfortunate experience of seeing it in action with my real dad.  Because of his frustrations with my grandfather and later because he joined the union (yes, I went there) and taking those ideas too far, he developed a sense of entitlement toward the universe.

It was particularly sad because he was a very intelligent man and could’ve been an engineer.  Instead he was content to spend his days as a line tech and quality inspector, while in his mind believing he should be paid more for what already doing.  What was even more sad is that he allowed this mentality to degenerate into determinism and abdication where he didn’t take care of himself.  He eventually died at the young age of 61.  All because of he allowed his sense of entitlement to drag him into a scarcity mindset and destroy him.  I don’t want this to happen to you or myself.  Read tomorrows post to shake off the sadness of this story and be challenged further.
