Memorial Day

US Marines: “Semper Fidelis”
US Air Force: “Integrity First, Service Before Self, Excellence in All We Do”

US Navy: “Honor, Courage, Commitment”

US Army: “This We’ll Defend”

US Coast Guard: “Semper Paratus”

Taken from http://www.military-quotes.com/mottos/USA.htm

These mottos are the expression of the values of the warrior culture in the form of the United States Military.  Today is the day that we honor those who have fallen fighting our enemies both Foreign and Domestic from the Revolutionary War to the the present Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Regardless of your view’s the thing that can be agreed upon is this.  It takes self-command, courage, selflessness, and integrity to put yourself in harms way in the interests of a population with whom you are largely unacquainted.  It takes courage to defend the idea of America.  Which itself entails the ideas of freedom, self-determination, fairness and justice.

So let us remember this day those who have fallen.  Before you light that grill, drink that beer or celebrate, let us first with solemn silence remember those who have made our country possible and who continue to defend our nation’s ability to exist and thrive.

We would be remiss if we simply remembered those we honor.  Let us also seek to imitate their example and integrate those values into our own lives.  Let us cultivate self-command, personal independence, growing, and the ability to defend that which we love both with fist and with weapon.  Not that we seek to destroy, save for those demons that would tear at what we are building, but that we seek to defend and preserve our sacred humanity and cultivate it and share it with others.
